Summer is basically here, right? It's finally above 50* in the midwest so thats basically summer to us, well if you ignore the rain and the frustrated farmers. I may be ~slightly~ behind on my trend research, but I'm human and there for flawed.
I'll have everyone know that I have been saying that the 70's were coming back in full force, and let me tell you. I. Was. Right. Say hello to warm tones, utilitarian styles, tailored fashion, and tie-dyed fabrics! Cause ladies, the 1970's have entered the group chat.
Doing an obligatory search, I was greeted with high fashion tie-dye. I don't know how to label my initial reaction to haute couture fashion houses putting models in tie-dye, but its growing on me. This, to me, is a trend that is the most attainable to the more money consciences consumer. Everyone's local grocery conglomerate sells a tie-dye kit. However, head my warning, make sure the bottles are tightly sealed. There was a week where my hand and right thigh were blue one summer.
Next on the list of trends comes possibly my favorite. As a history nerd turned fashion lover, fashion history is my steez. Tailored fashion is coming back. I have loved the look of a well structured jacket/pant combo, and I am ecstatic that it is becoming trendy once again. Im sure you're sitting there thinking, "Girl how much more tailored can you get with Kim K's body con dresses". My answer would be, well you can't. BUUUUT, they are totally different things. A well tailored jacket should ~hug~ the body, and provide shape without hindering the wearers movement. This trend plays into the utilitarian movement that's also happening right now. It is reminiscent of when the white tee shirt was the "it thing" to wear. Think flight suits, your local mechanic, and women's fashion experiencing practical pockets for once. Women everywhere can rejoice.
There was also a number of pieces that had texture them. Ruching and ruffles are making a comeback and when done properly, they are the epitome of elegance. Four year old Olivia is doing a happy dance because princess dresses are back. Rich fabrics that cost more than a typical car payment also help with the prettiness of the garment, but, hey, semantics.
I didn't consider this to be part of my previous trend research, but as I sit here writing this, I s
tarted to ponder if any of these trends were realistic for my audience. That audience being midwest, small town dwelling, farm families. Honestly, they kind of are. I tend to be the peacock amongst brood of hens, but I swear it's doable. Tie-dye has been a camp staple around here for YEARS. Button down shirts are a business casual staple. Jumpsuits with utilitarian touches aren't that unrealistic. Not to mention ruching and ruffles are the perfect way to disguise problem areas.
Be brave with fashion, life is far too short not to take a few risks. And like, think about all the photos you can embarrass your kids with. Totally worth it.
